Ag Bag Drag (GOOSE)
One of the social events we are well known for is Ag Bag Drag (GOOSE). This is now a large party where Agriculture grads from years past and University students from today gather to celebrate the tradition. After looking through archives and talking to past grads it was discovered that this tradition was born when the A.S.A. passed a motion to combine their pre-Christmas dance with that of the College of Household Sciences in 1952. In 1955 it was decided that there should be a kickoff week dedicated to promote Ag Bag Drag (GOOSE). In the past kickoff week has included such activities as milking dairy cattle and catching pigs. To further promote this event a beard growing contest was conducted in 1958, a tradition that now includes the females of the college by not allowing them to shave their legs for the entire month of October.
Even though the face of Agriculture has changed so drastically in the last century, the traditions in the College are being kept alive.
The famous Agro Drag Car tradition is also alive and well. Each year at the beginning of October first year agriculture students band together and purchase and old car which they christen by painting it blue and adding Drag slogans. It is then driven around the city to promote Drag. Both upper year Ag students and Engineers attempt to "steal" the drag car during the month of October up until the night of Drag setup where the car is laid to rest as all the previous cars have been.
On October 26th, 2007, approx. 793 people from all across the Prairies gathered to celebrate Ag Bag Drag (GOOSE) 2007. We all hope that next year's Drag will be the best yet!
